Cities Forever Young: Designing a Sustainable Urban Experience

Yard 9 (NWXSE) was in Istanbul for the conference titled Cities Forever Young: Designing a Sustainable Urban Experienceon September 27, at Building Information Centre (YEM). Yard 9 partners, Jos Oberdorf (NPK Design), Prof. Matthijs van Dijk (KVD) and Marcel Vroom (MVAVD) were the key note speakers of the Conference. The conference was made possible by organizer 34solo and sponsor Material ConneXion Istanbul. Conference audience, amounting 200 people, consisted of architects, interior designers, landscape designers, engineers and architecture and design students. Building Information Centre’s CEO Do?an Hasol delivered his opening remarks by reminding that 2012 is the 400th year mark of official Turkey-Holland relations and worth celebrating starting with this Conference.

First speaker of the evening, Prof. Matthijs Van Dijk of Delft Technology University explained how ‘reframing’ could be used to design a future urban environment where all citizens foresee. He added: “We forget that from time to time we design for citizens”.

Marcel Vroom took the floor secondly and draw audience’ attention to rapidly evolving technological infrastructure design and how that changed the public space. By showing typewriter, telephone, camera and iPad components as examples he took the audience through the advancements in design and technology making more complex products with less and less parts and material.

Jos Oberdorf was the last speaker of the night. Oberdorf shared interesting cases like antenna systems, Amsterdam tram stops, high-speed train lines in which sustainability was one of the design components.
